49ers Stay Active on Receiver Market Amid Training Camp Injuries

The San Francisco 49ers breathed a sigh of relief after standout Jauan Jennings participated in training camp after announcing his desire for a new contract, eliminating any worry of another hold in/out from a wide receiver.

That, however, hasn't taken away all concern related to the receiver room.

Brandon Aiyuk, who rehabs a torn ACL from Week 7, and Ricky Pearsall, nursing a hamstring strain from minicamp, were both moved to the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to begin camp. Now, second-year receiver Jacob Cowing is sidelined with a hamstring injury of his own.

The 49ers held a crowded WR tryout and promptly signed Equanimeous St. Brown - brother of Detroit Lions star Amon-Ra - to combat these losses. Thursday, another one of those tryout campers was signed in Quintez Cephus (what names!).

He was in action at training camp shortly after his signing:

These players still have a long way to go before making the 53-man roster, but while there is room on the 90-man group at camp, it's worth giving out as many opportunities as possible.

Still, San Francisco is in search of another depth piece to fill out the regular season unit while Aiyuk is out. There are a couple prominent names still in free agency that could fight for the starting lineup ... and one of them has already made a visit to the Bay Area.

Former Buffalo Bills breakout receiver Gabe Davis is still searching for a home after he was cut following an underwhelming start to his Jacksonville Jaguars tenure. He had signed a three-year, $39 million contract last offseason, but was released after just 239 receiving yards in 10 games. He recently expressed that he is interested in signing with the 49ers.

“San Fran is definitely a spot I’m looking at," said on the Up & Adams postcast. "[Kyle] Shanahan’s the man. He knows how to call an offense. They just got a lot of great weapons around there."

Davis recalled his meeting with the team and how it was nice to catch up with some former teammates from throughout his career. He rekindled with backup QB Mac Jones, who spent last season with the Jags, and former UCF teammates Kalia Davis and Richie Grant.

"Definitely a team I'm interested in, for sure. ... It's awesome."

After a hint that the Niners needed a deep threat such as himself, Davis acknowledged those weapons in the receiver room.

"I give props to those guys. Those guys've been making some plays," Davis said. "Jennings was making hella plays when he had to. It was awesome to watch. Aiyuk is a stud, he's a true No. 1 player. Got a lot of respect for his game.

"Definitely a team that interests me because I like to be around great players like that. It's definitely a great opportunity."

Davis' best season came in 2022 with Buffalo when he hauled in career-highs in receptions (48), yards (836) and touchdowns (7).
