49ers To Make K Addition

The 49ers will play their first game on American soil this Sunday. They may do so with a new kicker in the fold on a temporary basis, though.

Eddy Pineiro is currently dealing with an illness. He has not participated in practice this week as a result. Insurance for Week 2 could wind up being needed. Pineiro is listed as questionable on the 49ers’ injury report.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Sunday (via ESPN’s Nick Wagoner) a kicker addition will be made. Pineiro’s status atop the depth chart should not be in danger, of course. The veteran remained in place with San Francisco this offseason by inking a four-year, $17MM pact.

Pineiro connected on two of three field goal attempts during the 49ers’ Week 1 win in Melbourne. He went three-for-three on extra point kicks, continuing a strong run across 14 San Francisco games last season. The former Bear, Jet and Panther missed only five kicks during the regular season in 2025 (one lengthy field goal and four extra point tries). A similar showing this year and beyond would certainly be welcomed on a 49ers team seeking long-term stability at the kicking spot.

With a league-leading $44.1MM in cap space, finances will of course not be a problem as it pertains to a San Francisco kicking addition in the immediate future. A free agent arrival in time for kickoff on Sunday will be taking place.
