49ers To Sign Ogbonnia Okoronkwo

The 31-year-old Okoronkwo is aiming to bounce back from an injury-wrecked 2025 in Philadelphia, where he suffered a triceps tear in September and played just one game. Okoronkwo joined the Eagles off a fairly productive and healthy three-season stretch divided between Houston and Cleveland. Between 2022-24, he averaged approximately 16 games, 33 tackles, nine TFL, eight quarterback hits and four sacks per year.

Now a seven-year veteran, Okoronkwo entered the NFL as a Rams fifth-round pick in 2018. The former Oklahoma Sooner spent four years with the Rams, including their Super Bowl-winning 2021 season. Raheem Morris, now the 49ers’ defensive coordinator, held the same position in Los Angeles that year. Okoronkwo, who tallied two sacks in 13 games under Morris in L.A., is now reuniting him with him in San Francisco a half-decade later.

While Okoronkwo will try to earn a roster spot as a veteran depth piece for the 49ers, he is not a needle-moving EDGE pickup for the club. Despite finishing dead last in the league in sacks in 2025, the 49ers have held off on making significant pass-rushing additions in free agency or via trade. Their biggest investment thus far has been Romello Height, a third-rounder whom they drafted 70th overall.

As things stand, it appears the 49ers will primarily rely on pass rushers Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams to rebound from the ACL tears they suffered last season. Bosa is nearing participation in team drills, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic, who adds that Williams may be ready to practice by the end of the month. However, Williams’ status for Week 1 is “murky,” according to Barrows. The 2025 first-rounder remains on the active/physically unable to perform list. If Williams is not off the list when the 49ers finalize their roster on Aug. 30, he will shift to reserve/PUP and miss the first four games of the season.
