49ers' Trent Williams compares Brock Purdy to Peyton Manning

San Francisco 49ers All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams has compared rookie quarterback Brock Purdy to a Hall of Famer.

"You would think he's been in the league 15 years," Williams told NFL Media about Purdy on Wednesday, per Bridget Condon of the league's website. "If you're talking, he'll say, 'Shut your a-- up.' He ain't no timid rookie feeling his way around. He will get on your a--. You would think he's like Peyton Manning or something. Wide receivers not running, you'll hear him cussing a wide receiver out."

Purdy, the last pick of this year's NFL Draft, was supposed to spend his first pro season as an inactive spectator but was called into action against the Miami Dolphins this past Sunday after Jimmy Garoppolo went down with a broken foot. The 22-year-old completed 25-of-37 passes for 210 yards with two touchdowns and an interception en route to helping San Francisco earn a 33-17 victory that improved the club to 8-4.

49ers Week 1 starter Trey Lance was lost to a season-ending ankle injury in September.

Williams was left impressed both by Purdy's play and by the signal-caller's poise.

"You come into a game versus one of the best teams in the league and everybody is looking at you to feed off of you," the tackle added about Purdy entering the Miami matchup as a backup. "If you come in and you don't seem confident and you seem very hesitant, then everybody else starts to worry and play hesitant. When you come in and you act like you know what you're doing and you look like you know what you're doing, everybody is going to assume you know what you're doing."

While it's hardly surprising teammates such as Williams, Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw are speaking so highly of their new QB1 this week, club legend and Hall of Famer Joe Montana raised eyebrows when he recently said he believes Purdy can guide the 49ers to Super Bowl LVII.

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Wednesday there's a "way outside chance" Garoppolo could return from his latest setback "late in the playoffs" next month. Purdy must put such potential distractions out of his mind when the 49ers host the 6-6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday.
