49ers' Trey Lance addresses training with Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance acquired some pointers from Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes during springtime workouts.

"Being able to be around Patrick was awesome," Lance said amid voluntary organized team activities, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. "Just picking his brain, learning about just the type of guy he is, how he spends his free time, offseason, and then more about his in-season schedule as well."

Lance completed fewer than two full games last September before he suffered a serious ankle injury that left him needing multiple surgeries and then watched as Brock Purdy, the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, became a rookie sensation.

Purdy is recovering from elbow surgery he underwent on March 10 but is on track to resume throwing as soon as next week. Head coach Kyle Shanahan recently expressed optimism that Purdy will be available when San Francisco opens the 2023 season at the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 10.

Meanwhile, Lance was the subject of numerous trade rumors in the months and weeks leading up to this year's draft but suggested earlier this week he wants to fight for his place with the 49ers along with Purdy and free-agency signing Sam Darnold. The 23-year-old indicated he'll be a better overall player after he spent the majority of the 2022 campaign as a spectator.

"I learned a ton," Lance added about his second pro season. "I was able to focus on the right things. Just having a better idea, even better this year coming into year three of what is expected of me, how to run the offense, being able to watch (Jimmy Garoppolo) and Brock play at such a high level."

The 49ers appear willing to hold onto Lance, largely because the No. 3 pick of the 2021 draft likely isn't worth much on the trade market. With that said, Lance may spend the preseason auditioning for other teams as Purdy works to get cleared in time for regular-season action.
