49ers waive Terique Owens, son of San Francisco legend Terrell Owens

The San Francisco 49ers are waiving wide receiver Terique Owens, the son of 49ers legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens, according to multiple reports. This move comes after Terique Owens scored a touchdown in the 49ers’ final preseason game.

Owens signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft, but was waived during camp with an injury designation. He signed back on the 49ers’ practice squad and was with the team for the rest of the year.

Owens played college football at Florida Atlantic (2019-2020) and Missouri State (2021-23). During his final season at Missouri State, Owens caught 28 passes for 528 yards and four touchdowns.

After Terique Owens joined the 49ers last year, Terrell Owens spoke to Josina Anderson about his reaction when he learned that his son was going to join his former team.

Terrell Owens is ‘proud’ of Terique Owens

“I’m proud of him,” Terrell told Anderson, per NBC Sports Bay Area. “All we ever asked for is an opportunity. He’s wanted to make his own name and carve his own path to get to where he is. We would’ve loved to have gotten drafted, but he’s got his foot in the door. Now he has to continue to do all the right things and show people he can play. Like I told him, he doesn’t have to be me; just be himself.

“He’s just as good as any of these other kids who got drafted; the only thing is some of them have played more football than he has. So, he should be encouraged … I started in junior high. I was on the team, but I wasn’t playing … I didn’t play varsity until like my 11th grade year. He has tremendous upside and knowledge he still can gain. He can run fast and catch, just didn’t play at an earlier age and really get going [until] like his senior year. So, I’m excited to see him grow more now.”

Terrell Owens played in the NFL for 15 seasons and spent the majority of his career with the 49ers (1996 to 2003). He finished his career with 1,078 receptions, 15,934 yards and 153 touchdowns.
