We're just over a week away from training camp being over for the Detroit Lions and the rest of the NFL. The final cutdown day is next Tuesday at 4:00 P.M. ET. After that comes the fun of watching players who got cut either get claimed on the waiver wire or signed once they clear waivers. We won't really know the final 53-man roster until probably Friday of next week.
With that in mind, we've scoured the 53-man projections for all 32 teams and have found four players at four different positions that the Lions could go after once they're cut. Here's who we got:
The rookie edge rusher out of Minnesota has played fairly well in his first preseason action, but he's in a spot where the edge rusher situation is pretty well figured out with Maxx Crosby, Malcom Koonce, Tyree Wilson, and Charles Snowden. That could make him the odd man out. The Raiders would probably like to have him on their practice squad, but maybe the Lions would too. You just can't have enough edges in the building.
I don't know if you've noticed, but the Lions aren't the deepest at tackle, and they keep having injuries happen to them. Lowe has been a starter for the Patriots in the past two seasons, but now they have fourth overall pick Will Campbell, and they signed Morgan Moses in free agency. Lowe is the odd man out, and he could be worth a claim to help shore up some depth issues in Detroit.
McGlothern showed out for the Vikings in last year's preseason and got some time to play regular-season football, too. This summer, the Vikings have seen a rising cornerback in Zemiah Vaughn come up and take McGlothern's spot. On top of that, they now have Isiah Rodgers and Jeff Okudah, too. McGlothern could easily get a roster spot in Detroit after Ennis Rakestraw's season-ending injury. This is a player who would be worth a waiver claim by the Lions.
A former draft crush of mine, sure, but the Lions do need a tight end three, and neither Zach Horton nor Shane Zylstra has really wowed this summer. Kuntz is a big 6-foot-8 tight end who is capable of being both a receiving threat and a steady blocker. Imagine this giant clearing some way for Jahmyr Gibbs. At worst, I've often wondered if he could play swing tackle.
