The New England Patriots wasted no time.
On Sunday, it was reported that they have hired Mike Vrabel to be the next head coach of the Patriots.
It was always the expected choice, but now the next question is who will join him on staff. And that starts with the offensive coordinator position.
So, let's take a look at some possible candidates.
Another reunion for the Patriots? ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported earlier this week that if Vrabel was hired, Josh McDaniels would be a prime candidate to be the offensive coordinator. And it makes sense why.
McDaniels was with the Patriots at the same time as the new head coach (2001-2008), so they are already familiar with each other. And McDaniels has a lot of experience helping develop young quarterbacks. Drake Maye is the focus of the offense, with the team not wanting to do anything to hinder his development. But, McDaniels would certainly be a good choice to help Maye reach his full potential.
Alex Van Pelt was used as a scapegoat many times this season by both the public and the coaching staff. But the way players spoke about him said it all. And that included Drake Maye.
Maye defended the offensive coordinator adamantly all season, and has used every opportunity to praise him. Plus, Joe Milton's performance in the season finale spoke a lot about Van Pelt's ability to develop a quarterback. While Milton was highly regarded for his arm strength, many wondered if he could develop into an NFL quarterback. With Van Pelt's guidance, he certainly did.
So, is it worth giving him another chance considering how much Maye wants to keep working with him?
Rees served as the Cleveland Browns pass game specialist and tight ends coach last season, working with Vrabel. He also has offensive coordinator experience at the college level, first with Notre Dame from 2020-2022 and then with Alabama in 2023.
Caley was offered the Patriots offensive coordinator job last season, but ultimately turned it down, opting to remain with the Los Angeles Rams. However, with Vrabel taking over along with the ability to work with Maye, he could decided to return to New England.
