5 Dallas Cowboys to watch in the preseason including former first-rounder in last chance year and rising UDFA rookie

Saturday will mark the official start of the Dallas Cowboys' 2025 preseason when they take on the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium.

Though starters aren't expected to play much if at all, training camp has given us a clear list of players fans should focus on. Below is my top five and because some of you might not be obsessively following camp, I'm adding the jersey numbers for each player so you know who to look for come gameday.

Let's dive in.

RB Jaydon Blue, No. 34

The fifth-round rookie is off to a great start at training camp, quickly establishing himself as a dynamic and explosive playmaker, to the point of earning first-team reps in the latest practices. He's gotten some big gains and even added a few impressive catches. But make no mistake about it: Veteran teammates Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders appear to be leading the way as the starters of the group.

For Blue, it's time to prove his game translates to an exhibition setting. At practice, where the whistle blows a little bit earlier than in a game, it's tough for running backs to show off their ability to break tackles. If Blue is able to turn it up in three preseason games in August, his ascent on the Cowboys' depth chart could be sped up. We know how dangerous he can be in open space but how I'm watching how he performs running between the tackles and through traffic.

WR Traeshon Holden, No. 7

Talk about making a statement in camp: The undrafted free agent who was guaranteed a surprisingly low sum of $3,000 is starting to look like someone who could make the 53-man roster. Holden has stood out at practice with multiple catches—some of them wild, some of them not as much—and has looked smooth in his route running.

Holden is probably fighting Ryan Flournoy, Jalen Brooks, Jalen Cropper, among others for the sixth wide receiver spot on the team should Dallas carry as many players at the position. He might need to stand out on special teams to win the battle.

DT Mazi Smith, No. 58

Third-year former first-round draft picks aren't supposed to play a lot in the preseason. But Mazi Smith needs to because this year could be his last chance to secure a long-term future in Dallas. Though he's under contract through 2026, Dallas could realistically treat this as a prove it season before they have to make a decision on his fifth-year option next spring.

The Cowboys' rep distribution has made it clear competition is ongoing at the nose tackle spot and free agent signings Perrion Winfrey and Solomon Thomas are getting some look at that spot. Seventh-round rookie Jay Toia has gotten some run with the first-team, too.

Simply put, being picked in the first round won't secure the starting job for Smith. A strong preseason might.

EDGE Donovan Ezeiruaku, No. 41

Ezeiruaku has been one of the biggest stars from Cowboys' training camp. The second-round rookie is not perfect by any means but his pass rush is as advertised. He's managed to beat just about every offensive tackle on the team. On Saturday, Ezeiruaku gets to be able to hit the quarterback for the first time.

Say no more. I'll be in the lookout for No. 41.

OT Nate Thomas, No. 71

On Tuesday's joint practice versus the L.A. Rams, backup left tackle Nate Thomas had to face elite edge rusher Jared Verse. Though he got some wins, Verse did his best to exploit the mismatch and bested the former seventh-rounder in both the run and pass game.

Thomas' assignment should be easier on Saturday as I wouldn't expect Verse to play but the reps will be equally as important. If Tyler Guyton can't go Week 1 (knee), the Cowboys will need Thomas to protect Dak Prescott's blindside. Right now, I would list him at the top of my concerns going into Week 1. Let's see what he brings to the table in August.
