The Pittsburgh Steelers are back in Latrobe, and the opening days of training camp have already provided several storylines worth following.
It remains far too early to draw any firm conclusions from a handful of practices, especially before the pads come on and preseason games begin. However, the first few days can still offer an early look at how competitions are developing, where players are lining up, and which newcomers are beginning to stand out.
From the battle behind Aaron Rodgers to an encouraging start from Germie Bernard, here are the biggest stories from the opening week of Steelers training camp.
Solid start to this practice for Mason Rudolph. Looks sharp. Defense threw him a few different looks but he recognized coverages and blitzes, and went through progressions / hit his hot routes.

Aaron Rodgers remains firmly established as Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback, but the competition behind him should be one of the most closely watched battles throughout camp.
Mason Rudolph entered the summer as the experienced option in the room, giving the Steelers a veteran who already understands the organization and has started meaningful games in Pittsburgh. He began camp taking the “number two” reps, firmly established as the backup.
However, that could change with last year’s sixth round draft pick, Will Howard, and this year’s third round pick, Drew Allar. Both could represent the future of the position and should receive plenty of opportunities to make their cases to unseat Rudolph.
The Steelers will eventually have to decide how many quarterbacks they are willing to carry on the active roster. Until then, every practice and preseason appearance will matter for all three players.
Pass interference, doesn’t even matter when it’s that Rodgers to Metcalf connection.

Are we really surprised? Training camp often creates opportunities for receivers to stand out, and Metcalf has wasted little time placing himself in that conversation.
DK has looked comfortable during the early portion of camp, showing a “year two” rapport with Rodgers. The athleticism and receiving ability that made him a trade target by Pittsburgh last year is on display.
His ability to create separation, work through traffic, and make plays after the catch should stave off any of the newcomers from taking his spot. Metcalf’s biggest challenge will be maintaining momentum once practices become more physical and the competition intensifies. For now, however, he has been one of the more encouraging offensive players during the opening days in Latrobe.

The Steelers entered training camp with questions surrounding the offensive tackle position, and the opening practices have started to provide a better idea of how the group may fit together.
Keyword: “may.”
Broderick Jones’ health remain one of the most important parts of the equation. Jones has dealt with injuries and inconsistency during the early portion of his career, making his availability and development a major storyline for an offensive line that needs more stability on the edges. The good news for the former first round pick is that he was cleared to participate following a season-ending neck injury, and didn’t begin camp on the PUP list.
That will help him potentially fend off rookie Max Iheanachor, though the Steelers 2026 first round draft selection is a player worth monitoring. While he may not be expected to immediately push for a starting job, his size and potential give the Steelers another option at a position where quality depth is always valuable.
Troy Fautanu‘s development is also worth noting as he appears to be making a change from the right to the left side of the line. Fautanu is also looking to establish himself after injuries limited his first year in the league, and his second season was spent playing right tackle.
Thus far, Jones has been seen working on both sides of the line in drills. One would assume Jones and Iheanachor will be battling for the right tackle spot, while Fautanu – another first round offensive tackle draft pick by the team – needs to lockdown a starting role or risk losing is to one of the other two players who share a similar pedigree.
Joey Porter Jr. isn’t too far away from the team as the Steelers have their first practice at Saint Vincent College.

Joey Porter Jr.’s contract situation continues to hover over training camp, even as the focus shifts back toward football.
Porter has developed into one of the most important players in Pittsburgh’s secondary and is entering a pivotal stage of his career. The Steelers would like to keep their top young cornerback in place for the long term, but negotiations can become complicated as contracts at the position continue to rise around the league.
Further complicating matters is Porter being a late addition to the PUP list when players reported to Saint Vincent on Tuesday. Reportedly, Porter tweaked his back during a routine warmup, but speculation runs deeper that he was quietly sidelined during negotiations so a possible “sit in” situation wouldn’t become a larger distraction for the team.
Regardless, each day without an agreement will bring additional questions about whether the two sides can complete a deal, and if Porter will participate in camp before the regular season.

The early returns on Aaron Rodgers have remained positive as the veteran quarterback continues adjusting to a new offense and additional weapons.
Rodgers has looked as comfortable as ever directing the offense, and continues to be a leader on the field. He has also firmly stated this will be his last season playing football.
It’s high stakes for the 42-year-old, who rejoins his old head coach Mike McCarthy as the two look to recreate the magic they had years ago in Green Bay.
However, the more important development may be the chemistry Rodgers is beginning to build with his receivers. There will inevitably be uneven moments as the offense installs additional concepts, but Rodgers continuing to look sharp should be an encouraging sign for a Steelers team hoping to receive more consistent quarterback play.
The first few days of training camp are designed to create excitement, but they rarely provide definitive answers. After all, it’s “football in shorts.” (Editor’s note: we should trademark that!)
The competition between the young quarterbacks still has weeks to develop. The receivers must continue producing once preseason games kickoff and the offensive tackles need to prove themselves against pass rushers.
Still, the opening week has given the Steelers several encouraging developments and no shortage of stories to follow. As practices become more physical and preseason games approach, the picture surrounding Pittsburgh’s 2026 roster should begin to come into much clearer focus.
