The Pittsburgh Steelers traditionally avoid big splashes in free agency, but that has started to change under Omar Khan. Unlike Kevin Colbert, Khan isn’t afraid to mix it up in the free agent market. The free agent class isn’t great, but there are some gems that Pittsburgh could grab if it wants. These players might not be the most realistic options, but it would be super fun to see them wear black and yellow next season.
It isn’t a secret that the Steelers need more wide receivers before they arrive for training camp in Latrobe. They will likely have to pick one up in free agency and draft one. Free agency presents a few fun options that would fit the offense well. Romeo Doubs is one of them, providing reliable hands, red-zone production, and the ability to play outside and in the slot. He caught 55 passes for 724 yards and six touchdowns last season and has 21 touchdowns on 202 career receptions. Spotrac has his expected market value at $12 million per year, which is in Pittsburgh’s price range.
Linebackers are always in demand, and Nakobe Dean could come at a steal of a price. Spotrac says that his expected market value is $7.9 million per season, and he’s only 25 years old with a Super Bowl ring. He would get to stay in the same state. Dean has had problems staying healthy, but the lottery ticket is worth the risk at that price. The young linebacker has made 141 solo tackles and 19 tackles for loss in 47 career games played. He would fit nicely with Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson.
Besides Joey Porter Jr, the Steelers’ cornerback room is looking thin heading into the new season. Tariq Woolen could come at the reasonable price of $8 million per year, according to Spotrac, and that’s something Pittsburgh should kick the tires on. Woolen played 81% of defensive snaps on the Seattle Seahawks road to the Lombardi Trophy. Over his four-year career, Woolen has snagged 12 interceptions and five fumble recoveries along with 153 solo tackles. If the Steelers want to revamp the corner room, Woolen is a good place to start.
If Pittsburgh doesn’t retain Isaac Seumalo, they are going to need a plug-and-play guard. Broderick Jones’ neck injury could force them into also needing a tackle, but that could be addressed at the NFL Draft. Evan Neal hasn’t panned out in New York after being the seventh overall pick in 2022, but maybe he needs a change of scenery. He’s only 25 years old, playing 29 games in three seasons. Neal is a unit at 6’7” and 340 pounds. At his price tag, it could be worth seeing if the Steelers can refurbish him.
Wan’Dale Robinson is the hidden gem of this free agency class. He could get priced out of Pittsburgh’s range, but if Spotrac is correct that his market value is at $17 million per year, Khan should do everything in his power to bring him to town. He would be like a better version of Calvin Austin. Not as fast, but a way better football player, no offense to Austin. Robinson caught 92 passes for 1,014 yards and four touchdowns last season, averaging 63.4 yards per game in New York. He is an elite WR2 and would look great next to D.K. Metcalf.
While some of these options aren’t entirely realistic, they would help Pittsburgh immensely. If Khan can make a swing and get one or two of these players, it will change the outlook of the entire offseason. The Steelers don’t know who the quarterback is yet, but stacking the cupboards is essential for whoever it is going to be. Acquiring a WR2 should be priority number one for the front office over the next month. If Khan and company can land one of these players, it could dramatically reshape Pittsburgh’s offseason. Above all else, they must address the WR2 issue.
