5 Intriguing Traits To Know About Lions’ Rookie Jahmyr Gibbs
Kirthmon F. Dozier / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Detroit Lions made a major draft-night shocker when they opted to take running back Jahmyr Gibbs with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. It was a move that many analysts called a “major reach,” but only time will tell whether the decision was a good one or not.

One thing is clear, which is the fact that Gibbs is a big-time playmaker. He has excellent speed, quickness, and the ability to be a legitimate dual-threat running back out of the backfield. After signing David Montgomery in the offseason, the Lions are hoping that Gibbs can provide some electrifying lightning to the thunder of the former Bears’ running back.

Not only does Gibbs have being selected so high as a marker that sets expectations high, his selection also led to the Lions trading D’Andre Swift to the Philadelphia Eagles. Swift had become a fan favorite and has shown many flashes of being a potential star in his short time the Lions.

Following the selection, CBS Sports laid out five intriguing traits that Lions fans should take note of about Gibbs. They also gave three reasons for concern for the rooking running back.

Strengths:

  • Elite pass-catcher
  • Gets up to speed quickly
  • Great top-end speed
  • Plays with good balance and is willing to fight through contact
  • Shifty player who can re-direct quickly

Weaknesses:

  • Below-average mass for short-yardage situations
  • Does not have the mass to wear defenses down
  • Willing blocker but giving up a lot of mass in pass protection

Needless to say, these are only one analysts viewpoints on Gibbs. And, quite honestly, no one knows what kind of NFL running back he will end up becoming.

During the 2022 season with the Crimson Tide, Gibbs racked up 151 carries for 926 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. He also caught 44 passes for 444 yards and three touchdowns.

Those numbers show why the Lions decided to take a gamble on him. Jahmyr Gibbs has the talent to become a lethal playmaker in Detroit. If he reaches his full potential, the pick will actually go down as a steal, not a gamble.
