5 players on the waiver wire that Patriots needs to target after final roster cuts
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The New England Patriots have their initial 53-man roster set, but things can always change over the next two weeks as the team prepares for their season opener.

Along with the Patriots' decision, there are a lot of other players that were released by other teams that could really help New England.

The Patriots are third on the waiver wire ahead of Wednesday's claims. So here are give players they could target.

OT Geron Christian

Geron Christian is an experienced offensive tackle in the league, having spent time with numerous different teams. Most recently, he spent the preseason with the Tennessee Titans. But it's his past in Cleveland during the 2023 that really stands out. Christian made nine starts in nine games last season with the Browns, having worked with Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and offensive line coach Scott Peters.

That familiarity combined with the help needed at tackle could make him the perfect addition.

G/C Matt Hennessy

A backup center is a desperate need for the Patriots. They currently have Nick Leverett on the roster behind David Andrews, but Leverett has struggled a bit. In the preseason finale, he had two bad snaps to rookie quarterback Drake Maye. So bringing in some additional depth at that position isn't such a bad idea.

A to Z Sports' Kelsey Kramer provided a scouting report on Hennessy.

"If Hennessy can stay healthy he’s a great addition to any team as either a backup guard or center. In 2021, Hennessy started all 17 games at center for Atlanta where he finished ranked sixth overall and third as a run blocker, per PFF."

DT Zion Logue

The Patriots have put an emphasis over the past two seasons of drafting and developing younger players. So it makes sense why they would look towards defensive tackle Zion Logue. He was selected by the Falcons in the sixth round in the 2024 NFL Draft after a successful career at Georgia.

OT Caleb Jones

Tackle is a big need for the Patriots, so here's another option. Jones signed with the Packers in 2022 as an undrafted free agent. He spent his first season on the practice squad, but earned a spot on the 53-man roster last season. The Packers were forced to release the 6-foot-9 lineman because they drafted three offensive linemen this year. Plus, he has a connection with Patriots vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf.

WR Dee Eskridge,

The Patriots love a wide receiver who can also contribute on special teams. So that's why Dee Eskridge is an intriguing option.

Eskridge was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. In his rookie season and in his second year, he spent some time on injured reserve, and then in 2023, he was suspended for the first six games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. His history makes it more of a risk for the Patriots to bring him in, but he could help contribute on offense.
