Sports betting is already a risky endeavor, and that's before wagering five figures on a completely random event.
Fans can find odds on essentially everything ahead of Super Bowl 59. The color of a celebratory Gatorade bath, songs on Kendrick Lamar's halftime set list, and the possibility of Travis Kelce proposing to Taylor Swift all have betting lines ahead of Sunday's matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.
Sportsbooks also test how desperate degenerates are for action by making the pre-game coin toss available to wager. Apparently risk-seekers are willing to put money on a 50/50 event entirely out of their control.
Someone took the "tails never fails" mantra way too seriously. According to Ben Fawkes, a gambler wagered $71,000 on tails on DraftKings Sportsbook.
At least the bettor got even +100 odds that accurately reflect the 50 percent probability of a coin toss. FanDuel lists heads and tails at -104 each. Please seek help for gambling problems before placing that bet.
It's one thing to wager on items related to the actual Super Bowl. At least you can dig through data to make an informed decision on the spread, point total, and player props.
Meanwhile, someone just bet more than the average annual U.S. salary for the coin to land one way instead of the other. Hopefully this person has a lot of disposal income, in which case, maybe donate some instead of betting $71,000 on a coin flip?
If someone's throwing down that much on the coin toss, chances are they have more action on Super Bowl 59.
The Chiefs are 1.5-point favorites to win their third straight championship. Those expecting a threepeat could forgo the -118 moneyline to instead wager on Patrick Mahomes winning his fourth Super Bowl MVP at +120.
Sunday's game has a point total of 48.5. These teams soared past that line when Kansas City earned a 38-35 win over Philadelphia in Super Bowl 57. However, Kansas City's last six wins went under that tally before a 32-29 triumph over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game.
And yellow/line or green are the favored Gatorade colors over purple.
At least one person will be ecstatic or deflated before the Super Bowl starts at 6:30 p.m. ET on FOX.
