A bold 49ers' prediction has their worst nightmare become reality, with their season crumbling down because of a star player

The San Francisco 49ers chose to give Brock Purdy what the kids call "the bag" with a massive contract extension this offseason. Whether or not he lives up to that massive price tag will play a major role in how successful the team has in 2025 and beyond.

A recent A to Z Sports article shared some bold takes involving each of the four NFC West teams. The take for the 49ers predicts that Purdy will suffer regression, which could sink San Francisco's season.

Bold take has Brock Purdy regressing and impacting the 49ers' season

"The 49ers chose to give Brock Purdy a massive extension this offseason. If he can be what he was in 2023, they won’t have any regrets. Sadly, I don't see that happening, though. I think the version we saw last year is more likely attainable, but there's a world where he struggled to reach those numbers. The 49ers roster has lost a lot of talent over the last two off-seasons, and Purdy isn't the type of QB who's going to elevate players around him. I think the 49ers are going to experience major buyer's remorse after the 2025 season concludes, maybe not Daniel Jones level, but regret nonetheless."

- NFC West Hot Takes

Purdy had his worst season as a starter this past year, throwing only 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, which contributed to him having his first losing season as a starter in his career. He made 15 starts in 2024 and had a 6-9 record in those games. Purdy isn't the only person to blame for this, with the 49ers dealing with a significant amount of injuries on both sides of the ball. Due to those injuries, the 49ers didn't have their typical luxury of having one of the best and deepest rosters in the league, like in recent years.

Purdy has been labeled a QB that can win with a great roster, but not viewed as someone who can elevate players around him. There have been questions around the league about whether or not the 49ers' success in 2022 and 2023 had more to do with those around Purdy than Purdy himself. Last year, with the roster filled with injuries, he had his worst season. The 49ers still chose to pay him and believe in him as their franchise QB. They will no longer have the luxury of having their starter on a 7th round rookie contract. If Purdy struggles again this season, there could be some worry brewing in the team's building. On the flip side, though, if he is able to return to the level of play we saw in 2023, where he threw for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, the team will feel justified in their choice to pay him like a top QB.
