A Common Theme Starts to Emerge

It is obvious from the early organized team activities (OTA’s) that head coach Jeff Hafley set very high priorities for his players.

From the former Miami Dolphins players to the South Florida beat writers who have attended, Hafley reflects an “old school” coach’s mentality.

No BS, no playing around, no wasting time, no laziness, but expecting the highest level of effort from those on the field.

The 2026 Miami Dolphins may not have all the necessary talent on their roster, and may not win many games, but it is almost guaranteed that the players who end up on the 53-man roster will give whatever it takes to win football games.

Hafley is developing an entirely different culture than in years past, reminding me of the franchise’s greatest coach, none other than Don Shula.

I do not dare compare Coach Hafley to the winningest coach in football, but he is showing us a glimpse of a coaching style that Dolphins fans have not witnessed in many years.

The next few weeks will focus on weeding out who will make the team and who will not, and this process will continue when training camp begins in Mid-July.

From the brief video glimpses released, Hafley is also making it a point to teach and correct the fundamentals until a player gets them right.

And Hafley is an active participant in these drills, not simply a casual observer.

My impression is that he does not care whether a player “likes” him and considers him a “friend”; rather, the word “respect” comes to mind.

Teams that have proven successful and made it to the Super Bowl have a team mentality that plays for one another and does not let teammates down.

Hafley is instilling that type of unselfishness in these very early stages of OTAs.

The feedback I’ve seen from the players in their early media interviews has been overwhelmingly positive about Hafley’s approach.

Even though most NFL experts have predicted the Dolphins will win anywhere from one to four games, the process of rebuilding the team back to respectability is becoming an exciting one.
