A Dolphins rookie is the collateral damage from a roster shuffle that Miami desperately needed before their Week 4 matchup

The Miami Dolphins' rookie class of 2025 has had their hands full throughout the course of the first month of the season. Miami has seen rookies seize starting jobs on both sides of the line of scrimmage — with Jonah Savaiinaea , Kenneth Grant, and Jordon Phillips all featured heavily in Miami. Running back Ollie Gordon II looks like a promising talent as well, he's someone fans have been clamoring for more of after the preseason.

But with a Week 4 date with the New York Jets just hours away, one of the other members of Miami's 2025 rookie draft class has become collateral for a necessary roster move for Miami to survive this week's contest. Cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. has been placed on injured reserve to make room for kicker Riley Patterson.

Dolphins place another defensive back on injured reserve to make way for a kicker in Week 4

The move with kicker Riley Patterson to the active roster was telegraphed days ago. Kicker Jason Sanders is on injured reserve and not eligible to return to the active roster until after the Week 4 game. Miami, in his absence has been carrying Patterson on the practice squad and elevating him for each of the first three games of the season — but you can only elevate a player three times in a season.

Head coach Mike McDaniel conceded last week that the plan was for Patterson to find his way onto the active roster, and now we know how.

For Marshall Jr., it's a disappointing development for a player who seemed to flash in the preseason after getting converted from outside corner to the nickel. He suffered a hamstring injury in Week 3 against the Bills and will now miss at minimum four games as a result. Miami's rookie class will have to forge on without him for the next month as the Dolphins continue their bid to right their season starting tonight. Marshall Jr. becomes the team's fourth cornerback on injured reserve, plus cornerback Cam Smith's presence on the Non-Football Illness list.

As the saying goes, when it rains, it pours.
