The NFL Trade Deadline is right around that corner, and usually this time of year comes with a certain level of unreal expectations. With the Detroit Lions on a bye week, this feels like a good time to really break down those unreal expectations and make a nice list...
8 things the Detroit Lions aren't doing during the trade deadline and why
-
Trading for Trey Hendrickson: I've written more about this than probably anything else this year. It's really simple at the end of the day. The Bengals aren't going to move him. They were never going to move him. They've traded a player away one time at the deadline in the last 10 years. That was in 2021. Plus, the Lions don't want to bring in any contracts that hurt their ability to do the extensions they want to do.
-
Trading for Maxx Crosby: Flat out and in no uncertain terms, the Raiders are not making Crosby available. They don't want to trade him, and they've already told him they don't want to trade him.
-
Trading for a starting cornerback: The Lions just don't need to do this anymore. We saw on Monday Night Football against the Bucs that they have a deep group there, and they're likely to get Terrin Arnold, Avonte Maddox, and D.J. Reed back very soon.
-
Trading Jameson Williams: Everyone just needs to calm down around here. There are people on the internet right now saying things like "we overpaid him and he's not doing anything, we might as well trade him." No, stop it. Jameson Williams is powering this offense right now. Even when he's not getting catches. He's getting a ton of attention because teams are so eager to stop the explosive play. Once teams realize they need to pay attention to someone else, their targets will come back. He's not upset, and he's not going to "demand a trade." Please, people, stop with the conspiracies. This also goes for fans of other teams. Your team isn't getting Williams.
-
Trading anyone away: For that matter, the Lions aren't likely to move anyone at all. We suggested not long ago that Mekhi Wingo could possibly be traded, but at this point, I don't know what the point would be for Detroit unless they're moving him as part of a package to get another player.
-
Give Marcus Davenport his starting spot back: More of a prediction here than a declaration. If Davenport comes back during this time, he's probably taking on a rotational role because Al-Quadin Muhammad has been very good while Davenport has been gone. 27 pressures and 5.5 sacks are not someone you want sitting on the bench unless the Lions make a big-time trade.
-
Trading for left tackle: I know Taylor Decker is having issues with that shoulder right now, and I'm sure that the Lions would love to have an extra guy with Giovanni Manu on IR, but I think they trust Dan Skipper and feel good about Devin Cochran. Plus, if there's any team out there that has a good spare left tackle, they probably don't want to trade them.
-
Trading David Mongtomery: I'm just throwing this one in there for good measure.
