Ok, let's preface this by saying that this isn't the biggest mistake a GM of the Detroit Lions has ever made. In the grand scheme of things, the Lions will get over this, and it likely won't be a big deal. But it could have some Pistons trading Khris Middleton, and then Khris Middleton becomes Khris Middleton type ending to it.
Last year, the Detroit Lions signed undrafted receiver Isaiah Williams out of Illinois. Even at the time, it was shocking that he wasn't drafted. Despite being undersized, Williams was a force to be reckoned with in the Big Ten. He came in and earned a roster spot in Detroit with a really nice training camp and an explosive preseason.
At the time, it was hard to find a spot where Williams could make sense since the team had Kalif Raymond under contract for two more years, and he's holding down the return man job. Plus, what Williams is good at, Amon-Ra St. Brown is better at.
Now, with Raymond being in the last year of his deal and the Lions drafting Dominic Lovett in the seventh round to presumably take his spot, Williams would have made a whole lot of sense in that spot. But with all the injuries in 2024, the Lions had to let Williams walk, and there was no way he was clearing waivers. The Bengals picked him up, and now he's starting to turn heads in Cincinnati.

What a play by the second year man. From a chip block on Shemar Stewart to start the play, to GOING UP for the catch of the day for the TD. pic.twitter.com/NnssmOBGhb
The Bengals have a really strong duo in there with Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, but they could find their WR3 with Williams, and he could possibly be their return man in 2025, too.
The Lions have their future Raymond type in Lovett, and maybe he turns out to be something special. Detroit certainly made him a very important part of that first preseason game. He was back on returns, playing gunner, and was targeted nine times. There are things he needs to clean up. Let's see if he cleans them up.
