Khalil Mack’s future in the NFL remains undecided as the 34-year-old edge rusher weighs retirement against a return for the 2026 season

Mack played the 2025 season on a one-year, $18 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers. He recorded 5.5 sacks and 28 pressures across 11 starts, with an elbow injury limiting his availability. The Chargers were eliminated from the playoffs by the New England Patriots.

Mack has indicated that his decision will factor in family considerations and what he described as “the vibes,” without committing to a timeline. He enters free agency if he does not retire, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers identified as a potential destination. ESPN’s Matt Bowen notes that Mack could be a situational player for Todd Bowles’ defense, addressing a pass rush that ranked 18th in the league with 37 sacks last season. Tampa Bay finished 8-9 in 2025.

Chargers’ defensive strategy in limbo

The Chargers enter the offseason with head coach Jim Harbaugh moving into his third year and Mike McDaniel joining the staff as offensive coordinator. Mack’s status directly affects the team’s defensive planning, particularly along the edge.

Los Angeles also faces a contract decision on edge rusher Odafe Oweh, who is set to reach free agency and is expected to command a significant deal. Retaining both Mack and Oweh would require the Chargers to allocate substantial cap resources to the pass rush position group.

Mack’s career and destination factors

Mack’s career includes nine Pro Bowl selections and a Defensive Player of the Year award. He has not won a Super Bowl. A return to the Chicago Bears has been mentioned as a possibility, though the Chargers’ roster — built around quarterback Justin Herbert — and their 2025 defensive performance rated ahead of Chicago’s unit last season.

Mack’s decision is expected to hinge on a team’s competitive window, his role within the defense, and personal factors outside of football.

Mack’s decision and the Chargers’ next steps

If Mack returns, the Chargers would retain a veteran presence on the defensive line entering a season in which the organization has positioned itself as a contender. If he retires or signs elsewhere, Los Angeles would need to address the edge position through free agency or the draft.

The Chargers’ offseason defensive strategy — including how aggressively they pursue other free agents — depends in part on Mack’s decision, which remains pending as the free agency period approaches.
