'A Specimen Out There;' Green Bay Packers HC Sees Big Change in Wide Receiver Romeo Doubs

One of the biggest storylines of the Green Bay Packers offseason has been, and will continue to be, the competition at wide receiver. Christian Watson will (probably) be out for the first few weeks of the season as he recovers from a torn ACL suffered in Week 18. But even if Watson was healthy, the team would still have addressed the wide receiver position the same way that they did this offseason.

Romeo Doubs (9.7%), Dontayvion Wicks (11.8%), and Jayden Reed (12.0%) all were among the NFL leaders in drop percentage. Their inability to hold onto the football was a great source of frustration among fans and coaches, and the team put them on notice with their offseason additions.

The Green Bay Packers Drafted Matthew Golden and Savion Williams

The first move that the Packers made at the wide receiver position happened before the 2025 NFL Draft. They signed three-time Super Bowl Champion Mecole Hardman to a one-year contract, but only with $150,000 guaranteed. He may make the team as their kick/punt returner, but he is facing an uphill battle thanks to what Green Bay did next.

Matthew Golden became the first wide receiver taken by the Packers in the first round since 2002 when Green Bay used the 23rd overall pick in the draft on him. Savion Williams soon joined him on the team when he was selected in the third round.

Typically, the Packers take six wide receivers on their 53-man roster, though they have taken as many as seven in the past. But assuming they stick with six, their top five spots are almost assuredly spoken for:

  • Doubs
  • Reed
  • Wicks
  • Golden
  • Williams

Hardman has to battle Malik Heath, Bo Melton, and other undrafted free agents/roster hopefuls for the final spot. That is, assuming Watson opens the season on the PUP list.

But even with this unusual amount of depth at the position, none of the aforementioned receivers should feel comfortable. Clearly, the Packers were not happy with the overall production from the position group last year, and have set the wheels in motion to replace those that do not produce in 2025.

Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur Is Impressed with Romeo Doubs

While many fans are anxious to see Golden and Williams in action, head coach Matt LaFleur is evaluating all of his pass catchers, and he likes what he has seen from Doubs so far in OTA’s, especially in terms of the physical transformation he has made this offseason.

“Watching him work, he looks great out there,” LaFleur said according to the team’s website. “I don’t know if you guys can tell a difference in his physique, but he does look like a specimen out there.”

Doubs, of course, is entering the final year of his rookie contract. As Green Bay has not extended him a second contract offer yet, he is playing for a big payday once he hits free agency.

It is safe to say, though, that the Packers would love it if Doubs cleans up his drops and earns a second contract. He is a favorite target of Jordan Love’s and is one of just four wide receivers in team history to have 100 or more receptions, 1,000 or more yards, and 10 or more touchdowns through his first two seasons.

And it sounds like he is off to a great start this offseason.
