The day after Jets owner Woody Johnson publicly trashed quarterback Justin Fields at the NFL owners meetings, head coach Aaron Glenn met with the press and did his best to calm the waters. It was contentious at times between Glenn and the beat, but Glenn wants to present the appearance that everyone in the organization is on the same page.
When Rich Cimini of ESPN New York asked Glenn about Johnson not wanting Fields to play quarterback, Glenn interrupted to ask Cimini exactly what Johnson said. Cimini (correctly) implied Johnson’s comments about Fields not being able to “complete a pass” were highly critical, leading Glenn to ask if Johnson had said explicitly that Fields won’t be playing or that he didn’t like the quarterback.
Glenn’s desire to protect his QB is admirable, but to pretend an owner is on board with a player who he publicly humiliated just one day earlier being the starter is a just silly. No, Johnson did use the exact words “I don’t want Justin Fields starting” or “I don’t like Justin Fields”, but he did say that any team in the NFL with Fields as their quarterback would have the same results the Jets are having. That comment right there is Johnson saying that the Jets are bad and Fields is the reason.
Who starts on Sunday against the Bengals isn’t something Johnson is dictating, as Glenn says it’s entirely up to him, but you better believe Aaron Glenn is well aware of every word the owner said. Glenn claims he didn’t see Johnson’s comments but c’mon, Really, Aaron?
