Aaron Glenn reveals what stands out to him about Jets quarterback Justin Fields, and it's not what you'd expect

The New York Jets made a significant investment to sign quarterback Justin Fields in free agency. It's a transition phase for the team after the Aaron Rodgers era, and the new leadership group perceives Fields as the ideal player to lead it.

Head coach Aaron Glenn was asked about what he had seen from Fields, and his answer goes much beyond the quarterback's performance on the field.

"There's things about that player I think every coach wants those players to have. And he has this quiet confidence about himself," Glenn mentioned. "He leads by the way that he wants to lead. His influence with the guys out there, I think you guys can see it. He can galvanize a group of men."

Glenn also sees talent on Fields, though, and a high ceiling based on things everyone would naturally expect after watching him play in the NFL for four years.

"Obviously, he's a talented player and I'm happy that I have him as my quarterback," Glenn added. "I really am, because I think the sky's the limit for this player, I really do. I'm not going to go out there and say that he's the next Joe Namath or anything like that, but I will tell you what, he's going to be a good player for us, and I'm excited with what he's going to do for us this season."

Justin Fields certainly hasn't been what the Chicago Bears expected when they took him in the first round back in 2021, but the athletic quarterback had some type of resurgence last season on the Pittsburgh Steelers. In addition to his running ability, Fields had his best passer rating (93.3) starting six games before Russell Wilson got healthy. And that created a scenario where Fields is more confident in himself — even to elevate what his offensive coaches could call.

"At the end of the day, it's really not up to the scheme. Of course they're going to do their best to scheme it up, but coaches aren't going to call perfect plays every play," Fields said. "They always say it's up to the players to make plays when we need them the most. It's not necessarily in the scheme or anything like that, but when it's time to make those plays in the game, when it's time to make something happen, that's what I'm going to do, and that's what the guys around me are going to do as well. Even defense, offense, scheme really doesn't matter. It's really just that mentality that you have going into the game, going in every day in practice and just making a deposit every day and getting better each and every day."

Justin Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets. It's some type of bridge QB contract, but he will make significantly more money than recent examples of players in a similar position. The deal includes $30 million in guarantees, and a real shot to be a full-time starting quarterback in the NFL once again.
