On Wednesday, the New York Jets officially hired head coach Aaron Glenn, ushering in the next era of football in East Rutherford and once again getting the engine started on the fanbase’s optimism.
As a first-time head coach, he’ll need some help in doing so. He’s yet to hire his coordinators, and there seems to be no shortage of volunteers, especially coming out of the woodwork of New York history.
Glenn’s Jets got a key update on potential special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff.
He, to the ire of hopeful fans, won’t be joining the staff in a major role.
“Mike Westhoff told him during the break he is not coaching again,” Don Lagreca reported. “But helping out Aaron Glenn with potential hires and will volunteer his services to work with the Jets during training camp.”
Glenn and Westhoff briefly overlapped during their original Jets tenures. Glenn played cornerback for New York from 1994–2001, the final year being when Westhoff first joined the staff as special teams coordinator.
Westhoff spent over a decade in East Rutherford, spanning multiple coaching staffs and the two deep playoff runs that mark the last bright spot in the franchise’s history. Westhoff departed after the 2012 campaign – Glenn’s first year with New York as a scout.
Westhoff came out of retirement in 2017 to coach special teams for the New Orleans Saints. He spent two seasons under head coach Sean Payton before re-retiring and coming out of it again to join Payton with the Denver Broncos as an assistant head coach.
The iconic special teams coach has extensive ties with the Payton coaching tree and has been a coach in some capacity for 50 years. His assistance during both the hiring process and training camp could pay dividends.
Perhaps more importantly, Westhoff is just one of several former Jets who have expressed optimism about Glenn and offered their services. Even if they aren’t taken up on their offers, winning over big players from New York’s past is a sign of the goodwill Glenn has earned.
Turning that reputational capital into wins won’t be easy, but he has the backing of the franchise – and its legends – behind him.
