Future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers continues to keep fans and analysts guessing about his next move in the NFL. The veteran signal-caller, now 42 years old, has not yet committed to playing a 22nd season or stepping away from the game entirely.
His recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show marked his return to the popular platform, where he fielded questions on a range of topics without providing a definitive answer on retirement.
During the conversation, Rodgers sidestepped direct inquiries about his football future. Instead, he opened up more freely on personal matters, particularly regarding his private life and his marriage. He shared candid thoughts on why he maintains such a strict fitness regimen at this stage of his career.
“I want my wife to want to [expletive] me all the time,” Rodgers remarked when discussing his motivation for intense workouts.
The quarterback has been notably guarded about his wife’s identity, which has fueled widespread curiosity. He first confirmed his marriage publicly last June after signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, appearing at a press conference wearing his wedding ring. That moment marked the official acknowledgment that he had tied the knot earlier in 2025.
Public fascination with his spouse has reached intense levels, something Rodgers finds troubling.
“The obsession is [expletive] bizarre,” he stated. “That’s the only way to put it. The obsession is really bizarre.”
He emphasized that this level of interest goes beyond normal curiosity.
Rodgers detailed experiences that have heightened his desire for privacy. He described dealing with persistent followers who crossed boundaries.
“You guys know — you laughed about this many times and showed pictures of it — but we’re not living at the beach anymore,” he explained. “Part of it is, I have legitimate stalkers, and I don’t say that lightly or flippantly. I had been stalked at my house for about a year and a half when I was living there.”
The intrusions extended to everyday locations. Rodgers noted being followed to his preferred coffee spot and workout facility. Over time, the pursuit escalated with aerial surveillance. Paparazzi, he said, operated drones above his previous residence and even offered rewards for images of his wife.
These challenges influenced major life decisions. Rodgers revealed that his wife eventually relocated “back across the pond” for safety and peace. He admitted to associating with the wrong group of people during that period, some of whom appeared to exploit connections for media gain.
“She didn’t sign up for this bulls***,” he added in related comments from the discussion, highlighting her preference for staying out of the limelight.
Rodgers expressed frustration with pressures to maintain a high-profile presence online or in public. He made it clear that such a lifestyle never appealed to him. Looking ahead, he has no plans to transition into broadcasting or any visible role after football.
“When this is done, it’s Keyser Söze,” he declared. “You won’t see me.”
Speculation about his on-field status persists amid these personal reflections. According to NBC Sports analyst Matthew Berry, Rodgers appears inclined to continue playing.
“I was told he is leaning towards coming back, but that while you never know with Rodgers, the current expectation is that if he comes back, it would be to return to Pittsburgh,” Berry reported following insights from the NFL Combine.
Rodgers spoke positively about the Steelers’ current leadership during the interview. He praised new head coach Mike McCarthy, with whom he shared a long and successful tenure in Green Bay, including a Super Bowl victory 15 years ago. Pittsburgh brought in McCarthy after former coach Mike Tomlin’s departure in January, marking a new chapter for the franchise.
Whether Rodgers opts for one more year in Pittsburgh or chooses retirement remains uncertain. His comments suggest a deliberate approach, enjoying time away from the gridiron while keeping options open.
The coming weeks, as free agency approaches, may bring more clarity to the situation surrounding one of the league’s most accomplished quarterbacks.
