Questions about retirement have followed Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers for years. After tearing his Achilles tendon with the New York Jets in 2023, there were doubts about whether or not the Green Bay Packers legend would play another game.
Two years later, the four-time MVP is still playing good football in his 21st NFL season. In 12 games started for the Steelers this year, Rodgers has thrown for 2,370 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He has a 7-5 record as the starter, including last week's 27-22 win against the Baltimore Ravens to put Pittsburgh at the top of the AFC North standings.
That alone is not enough to stop the retirement discussions. Rodgers, 42, is playing on a one-year, $13.65 million contract with the Steelers, leaving a big question this offseason.
When 44-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers came out of retirement this week to join the Indianapolis Colts, ESPN's Brooke Pryor asked Rodgers for his reaction to the move. What emerged was the clear plan in Rodgers' head for when he eventually makes his own retirement decision.
"A couple buddies hit me up asking what I would do in the situation," Rodgers told Pryor on Thursday. "And I said, without missing a beat, ‘I’m retired. I’m staying retired.’”

“Well, I’m not the oldest guy in the league. Love that. … I was laughing because a couple buddies hit me up asking what I would do in the situation, and I said, without missing a beat, ‘I’m retired. I’m staying retired.’” pic.twitter.com/OFcfKKr9an
Whenever Rodgers ultimately decides to hang up his cleats, do not expect to see him make a Hollywood return.
"When this is all done, I'm out. You won't see me," Rodgers told ESPN's Pat McAfee in June during an extended rant about his private personal life with his mystery wife, Brittani.
When asked in the same interview whether or not 2025 would be his final NFL season, Rodgers said, "Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is it."

What we know about Rodgers' big decision is that coming out of retirement is not in the plan. But we still do not have a definitive answer on when he will call it quits on his surefire Hall of Fame career, which includes a Super Bowl XLV title and more than 65,000 career passing yards.
The Steelers have four more games remaining in the regular season, starting on Monday at 8:15 p.m. ET against the Miami Dolphins.
