In 2008, the Green Bay Packers decided to move on from Brett Favre and start the quarterback they had drafted three years earlier. That quarterback was Aaron Rodgers.
Favre was traded to the New York Jets and played one season for his new team, before getting released and signing with the former rival Minnesota Vikings for the last two years of his career.
Fifteen years later, a similar thing happened with Aaron Rodgers himself, with the Packers clearing the way for Jordan Love to start.
The outcome that Jets fans didn't expect is that Rodgers' tenure has been less successful than Favre's. Both in terms of team wins and individual performance.
Favre as a Jet is better than Rodgers as a Jet in EPA/dropback, dropback success rate, and net yards per attempt. Austin Gayle from The Ringer brought us the shocking stats.
Aaron Rodgers as a Jet:
— Austin Gayle (@austingayle_) November 18, 2024
-0.03 EPA per Dropback
41% Dropback Success Rate
5.9 Net Yards per Attempt
Brett Favre as a Jet:
0.06 EPA per Dropback
49% Dropback Success Rate
6.2 Net Yards per Attempt
You can't say Brett Favre's experience with the Jets was a success. Initially, he didn't want to play for the team — he asked for a release from the Packers so he could sign with the Vikings, but that's something former Packers general manager Ted Thompson would never do.
But in terms of on-field production, it really started well. The Jets began the season with an 8-3 record, including a sequence of five wins between Weeks 8 and 12. A playoff spot looked like a sure thing.
But then Favre suffered a shoulder injury, and his performance suffered a hit. The Jets lost four of their last five games, finished the season with a 9-7 record, and missed the playoffs.
"It's been a wonderful career. I couldn't ask for anything more. It was worth a shot for me to go to New York," Favre said right before being released. "I wish I could've played better down the stretch. I didn't. It's time to leave."
Throughout his career, Aaron Rodgers has certainly been more efficient than Favre — and he has won one more MVP award. But his tenure with the Jets has been worse.
Rodgers was traded to the Jets with the same age Favre had when he was moved. But number 8 got injured in his first game and missed the entire season. In 2024, which was supposed to be a strong season, Rodgers hasn't played at a high level, head coach Robert Saleh was fired, and the team is virtually eliminated from contention after only 11 weeks.
Brett Favre's tenure with the Jets was seen as a disaster and Aaron Rodgers would need to win out just to match his win total, with an extra loss cos of the 17 game schedule.

After the loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Rodgers admitted he is disappointed with the team's results. It's a challenge to keep his motivation to finish the season.
"I'm in my 20th year," Rodgers said. "I've figured out a way to do this for a long time, so just got to remember why you fell in love with this game. This would definitely be a week to clear all of our heads and come back and stick together."
Technically, Aaron Rodgers is still under contract through 2025. But even though the quarterback has said he intends to keep playing for the team, the Jets will go through changes next season. It will have a new head coach, maybe a new general manager if it doesn't re-sign Joe Douglas, and owner/chairman/CEO Woody Johnson can be a part of Donald Trump's administration again, opening space for his brother, vice chairman Christopher Johnson, to take care of the franchise.
The future is unclear. Maybe Rodgers will want to play elsewhere like Favre did. Maybe, he will call it quits.
But the fact is that Rodgers' experience with the Jets hasn't been like he predicted, and fans are more disappointed now than they were when the other Packers legend was in town.
