Aaron Rodgers explains why Jets fans should trust Nathaniel Hackett
Chris Pedota, NorthJersey.com-USA TODAY NETWORK

The New York Jets hired offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett last year and kept him this year mostly because of his close relationship with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. They worked together for three years with the Green Bay Packers, and that connection was fundamental through the Jets' process to acquire Rodgers in a trade.

Without Rodgers, though, Hackett has struggled to have success as an offensive mind. He was fired as the Denver Broncos head coach after just half a season, and the Jets was 32nd in offensive DVOA last season with Hackett as the offensive coordinator.

During an interview to SiriusXM, Aaron Rodgers explained why he thinks Jets fans have a reason to believe that this is going to work out in 2024, with the quarterback coming back from an Achilles injury.

"Well, you should trust me and I trust Nathaniel," Rodgers said. "So, to me, that's end of story. There's been a lot of BS that's been said out there. There's a lot of things that have gone on the last couple years that he's dealt with that I think he's handled very professionally. And at the end of the day, I think you gotta trust his and my working relationship and the conversations that we have."

In Green Bay, Hackett wasn't the offensive playcaller — that job was and is executed by head coach Matt LaFleur. However, the offensive coordinator was seen as an instrumental piece to install the system and weekly gameplans.

"We gotta believe in Nathaniel. There's been some things that we've improved on, been some things that were out of his control," Rodgers added. "At the end of the day, his and my partnership is one that's been fruitful in the past, and it's gonna be fruitful again."

In fairness to Nathaniel Hackett, he hasn't worked with great quarterback situations throughout his NFL career outside of the Packers. With the Buffalo Bills, he had a combination of EJ Manuel, Thad Lewis, Jeff Tuel, and Kyle Orton. With the Jacksonville Jaguars, they were able to minimize Blake Bortles' issues to reach the AFCCG in 2017.

In Denver, the team traded for Russell Wilson, but the experience went bad beyond Hackett — Wilson played better under Sean Payton, but not better enough to avoid a release with strong guarantees left on the contract.

Last season, Aaron Rodgers played only four regular season snaps. After his injury, the Jets' quarterback situation was a mix of Zach Wilson, Tim Boyle, and Trevor Siemian. None of them is on the Jets' roster anymore.
