It's rare for Aaron Rodgers to say much ahead of his official decisions, but he did talk a lot about his future during a Q&A with fans in Austin, Texas, last week. In addition to taking shots at the Chicago Bears, the veteran quarterback indicated what he will do—possibly face the Bears in Chicago in 2025.
But he also said what he won't do, and this is meaningful for th Green Bay Packers in some regards. Asked if he would consider playing for the New Orleans Saints, Aaron Rodgers was clear about his options.
"No, Rodgers directly said. "I've played there a couple times, but no. I'm too old, I don't want to live in Louisiana."
The two other realistic options for Aaron Rodgers to play in 2025 are the Pittsburgh Steelers and, to a lesser extent, the Minnesota Vikings. Both teams will face the Packers this upcoming season—and the Steelers-Packers matchup will be on a Sunday Night Football.
However, the Saints are not on the Packers' schedule this season. It means that, barring a surprising team to sign Rodgers, his most likely alternatives include playing against his old team—something he didn't do during his two seasons with the New York Jets.
Aaron Rodgers doesn't want to play for the Saints, and it seems like New Orleans wouldn't want the quarterback either.
The Saints have last year's fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener on the roster. This year, the team also spent the 40th overall pick to take Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round of the draft. After Derek Carrs' abrupt retirement, the Saints also signed undrafted free agent Hunter Dekkers.
Haener suffered an oblique tear during practice last week, but that doesn't change the situation much. After all, Shough and Rattler are the favorites to compete for the starting job.
And while the Vikings have a relatively comfortable quarterback situation and are expected to start last year's first-round pick JJ McCarthy, the Steelers have a clear need at the position.
Right now, the Steelers quarterback room has Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, and sixth-round rookie Will Howard.
