Aaron Rodgers on American Century Championship, Jets training camp: ‘Summer’s over on Sunday’
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Aaron Rodgers has one more round of golf in him, then it’s off to his full-time job as quarterback of the New York Jets.

Rodgers spoke to reporters between rounds at the American Century Golf Championship being played in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. And of course, there were questions about Rodgers surgically-repaired left Achilles tendon.

“My Achilles feels good, you know, I felt really good at the end of last year,” Rodgers told the media. “There’s always that kind of plateau part. It’s just about getting back into it. I felt good all spring. Had a beautiful trip to Egypt. This is like the last marker. Summer’s over on Sunday. Walking up on 18 is like super bittersweet, but it’s fun to be out.”

Rodgers mentioned Egypt. That’s why he skipped Jets mini camp

Did you take note of Rodgers’ reference to his trip to Egypt? That’s where he was when the rest of his Jets teammates were participating in mandatory minicamp last month in Florham Park. N.J. Rodgers’ absence caused quite the stir, at least amongst the media and fans. However, Jets coach Robert Saleh said that while Rodgers’ absence was unexcused, he and the quarterback had been communicating. The trip was planned, but it happened to fall during camp.

Rodgers, even after he finishes his final round in Lake Tahoe, still will have a few days before football starts. The rookies report to the team’s training center next Thursday. Rodgers and the rest of the Jets veterans are scheduled for July 23.

Team added more offensive talent in off season

So let’s circle back to Rodgers’ tender Achilles. His injury was one of the biggest stories of 2023. The Packers, at Rodgers’ request, traded the quarterback to the Jets last year. And there was so much hype and hope suggesting that New York would return to the playoffs and maybe make a run at the Super Bowl.

But as everyone knows, that wasn’t to be. Rodgers was injured on the fourth offensive snap of the Jets season opener against the Bills. New York rallied to beat Buffalo. The Jets finished the season at 7-10 and once again, outside of the post season.

However, with the 40-year-old Rodgers regaining his health, the Jets added more offensive elements to help him succeed.

The team used its first round pick on Olu Fashanu, an offensive tackle from Penn State. They also signed three free agent linemen, including former Dallas Cowboy Tyron Smith.

Plus, the Jets brought in more receivers. They already had Garrett Wilson, their first-rounder from 2022. New York also signed Mike Williams and selected Western Kentucky’s Malachi Corley in the third round of April’s draft.
