Aaron Rodgers made the quiet part of his one-year deal certain Tuesday during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. Rodgers revealed that this will be his final season and he will end his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
At this point with his legacy established Rodgers faces little pressure heading into 2025. Sure there is some expectation for him and the Steelers to show some fight in a loaded AFC, but the title aspirations are no longer present for the future Hall of Famer.
So why not enjoy this final campaign? That does not mean taking his foot off the gas for the coming months, but it does point to Rodgers surrounding himself with teammates whom he shares some camaraderie.
Surprisingly, he has found that in the span of just a few months in wide receiver DK Metcalf. The two spent a portion of the offseason working out together in California and caused Rodgers to gain a profound respect for his future teammate.
"D.K. is a lead-by-example guy," Rodgers said on McAfee's show. "He's a big reason I'm in Pittsburgh as well. Conversations that we had, and just the kind of person that he is. At the start of the year, I didn't really know DK at all.
"He's like, 'I work out at six a.m. every day.' I'm like, okay, this guy has discipline, this guy has a drive..."
Metcalf's engine not only helps him go individually but also drives the players around him to match that intensity.
"He is a solid dude, and he leads by example. The way he practices. The room goes how the top dog goes, and when DK catches the ball and finishes 60 yards to the endzone, it makes everyone else want to do the same thing."
Given Rodgers age and struggles in recent seasons there is plenty of skepticism of how this experiment will benefit the Steelers over the coming months. However, this fascinating Rodgers-Metcalf partnership provides some reason to believe this will work out in favor of Pittsburgh.
Rodgers has played with some extremely talented pass catchers throughout his career but none of them possess the same athletic package that Metcalf delivers week to week.
Pittsburgh's success hinges on more than just this partnership filling the stat sheet, but a translation of the two's offseason collaboration onto the field will only benefit the Steelers' campaign.
