Aaron Rodgers teases Robert Saleh’s ‘cool’ additions to Jets offense

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is loving what his head coach is adding to their offense. Rodgers is teasing that Robert Saleh has added a lot of wrinkles and schemes to the team’s strategy sessions.

“As a defensive coach, he’s been in that room a lot, but he’s been kind of sitting over to the left of me a good amount of the offseason so far. So we appreciate his influence. He’s brought some really good ideas to the table,” Rodgers said, per ESPN.

The veteran gunslinger says his head coach Saleh is making suggestions on what plays to run when facing specific defenses. For example, what offensive plays work better against a Cover-3 defense, as compared to a two-man blitz. Rodgers isn’t giving specifics on what those plays are, but this news is surely enough to whet the appetites of Jets fans starving for victories.

The expectations for the Jets offense this season are as high as they have been in years. Rodgers was lost for the year in 2023 on the team’s first offensive drive of the season. The quarterback seems to have recovered from his injury, a torn ACL. Rodgers has participated in every OTA asked of him this spring, according to Saleh. The coach and player have developed what seems a very trusting relationship.

“He’s added a lot of interesting stuff that you’ll see throughout the OTAs and training camp, which I think would be pretty cool for us,” Rodgers added.

The ideas will have to be cool. The Jets have endured a series of losing seasons in Saleh’s tenure, and the coach finds himself on a hot-seat heading into the 2024 campaign. New York’s offense sputtered for most of last season, after Rodgers’ injury. The team wasn’t able to establish a strong passing game to compliment rusher Breece Hall, and the team endured a 7-10 campaign.

New York sent their other quarterbacks packing this offseason, and also signed veteran Tyrod Taylor to back up Rodgers. The team also used several of their 2024 NFL draft picks on offensive players, including Western Kentucky wide receiver Malachi Corley in the third-round. The team is also strengthening protection for Rodgers, as the Jets used their first-round pick on offensive lineman Olu Fashanu from Penn State.

Saleh’s tenure

Saleh came to the Jets after having a successful run with the San Francisco 49ers, as the team’s defensive coordinator. He led the defense for the team’s run to the Super Bowl during the 2019 season. San Francisco lost that game to the Kansas City Chiefs.

While Saleh’s background is in defense, he is starting to expand his offensive repertoire. The coach was involved in the offense much more heavily in the last six games of the 2023 season, per ESPN. The Jets’ offensive coordinator is Nathaniel Hackett, who has been criticized for the team’s poor scoring offense. Rodgers is standing by Hackett, and this season should prove how effective the team will be if Rodgers is able to stay healthy.

Jets minicamp begins on June 11. Fans are certainly excited about the chance to see some of the new ideas coming to New York’s offense, and this may be Saleh’s last chance to show them off.
