The New York Giants have found themselves without a starting quarterback, and thus, firmly in the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes.
As free agency lingers, the shot clock on signing Rodgers is running low.
The potential Giants quarterback target will visit the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday, according to Gerry Dulac.
“BREAKING: Aaron Rodgers is at the Steelers facility today, an indication a deal with the team could be forthcoming, per sources,” Dulac posted.
While a deal certainly could get done, other reporting has suggested that a deal is not imminent. It is, however, more likely now than it was without a visit on the docket.
Others have expected Rodgers to let his free agency linger, drawing attention to himself while he ponders life in Pittsburgh or East Rutherford. But it stands to reason that teams could pivot to alternative starters like Russell Wilson.
On Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward’s “Not Just Football” podcast, he made it clear he doesn’t intend to wait on a quarterback who isn’t fully committed to Pittsburgh.
"I ain't doing that darkness retreat," Heyward said. "I don't need any of that crap. Either you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don't. It's that simple. That's the pitch. If you want me to recruit, that's the recruiting pitch. Pittsburgh Steelers. If you want to be part of it, so be it. If you don't, no skin off my back."
Heyward has also welcomed Wilson returning after an up-and-down 2024 that saw him win six of his first seven starts before losing his final five – including the Wild Card Round contest against the Baltimore Ravens.
Pittsburgh can offer Rodgers a path to the playoffs that New York may not be able to. The Steelers made the playoffs in 2024, and Rodgers could feasibly be a tick better than Wilson was in 2024, and thus capable of winning a playoff game. Even if it’s more likely than not that he continues the stagnation of mediocre offenses in Pittsburgh, the Giants may not be favored to make the playoffs – or even compete for a spot – with Rodgers in the building.
If he’s intent on winning in his final season, the Giants might as well invite Wilson back to the facility before the domino falls.
