Adam Gase a candidate for Patriots' OC opening?
Former New York Jets head coach Adam Gase Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Adam Gase was once regarded as a bright offensive mind around the NFL, but his reputation was more or less wrecked with his head-coaching stints in Miami and New York. One team may still hold him in high enough regard, however, to bring him back into the coaching fold.

The New England Patriots are in need of a new offensive coordinator after Josh McDaniels accepted the Las Vegas Raiders’ head-coaching position. Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston said Thursday he’d been told to keep an eye on Gase as a possible candidate. Bill Belichick is a noted fan of Gase’s work, and there are some ties to other former Belichick assistants.

The Patriots have been linked to another former NFL coach for the role, and that may be more likely. However, there is some logic behind the links to Gase as well. This is not the first time he’s been linked to the Patriots since the Jets fired him, and Belichick went out of his way to publicly praise Gase last year.

Gase went 32-48 as a head coach with the Dolphins and Jets. That won’t matter to the Patriots if they feel he’s right for the offensive coordinator job.
