Adam Peters may cut a Commanders draft pick that's run out of chances

Adam Peters has gained a reputation for being a ruthless roster builder. And he's done it in double-quick time.

The general manager took emotions out of the equation and unceremoniously disposed of those who weren't up to the new standards. It was a drastic yet necessary measure that put the Washington Commanders on much sounder footing moving forward, and the initial returns speak for themselves.

And Peters could cut another draft pick this summer who's probably run out of chances to impress.

Peters didn't think much of the way Ron Rivera went about his business on the draft front. None of his first-round picks are around. Very few remain from any rounds, in all honesty. This is also why the Commanders have been forced to acquire a plethora of veterans on short-term deals during the early stages of this substantial rebuild.

Chris Paul needs a monumental surge to make the Commanders' roster in 2025

One of Rivera's unheralded draft selections managed to escape the chop last summer. Chris Paul fought against the odds to book his place on the 53-man roster when all hope seemed lost. However, that was where the positivity ended for the offensive lineman.

It was evident from early on that the Commanders didn't trust Paul fully. He was buried down the depth chart, accumulating more healthy scratches than appearances by a comfortable margin. Just one offensive snap came his way, which was the clearest sign yet that the former Tulsa standout is being phased out of the team's plans.

This summer represents the last chance saloon for Paul in Washington. Anything less than significant strides comes with grave consequences attached. If Peters isn't suitably impressed, he'll cut the cord on the final year of his deal with almost no financial ramifications attached.

It might look pretty doom and gloom for Paul right now, but all hope is not lost just yet. The Commanders' offensive line interior isn't exactly brimming with quality depth. Sam Cosmi is unavailable as he recovers from a torn ACL. That opens up another spot for someone else if they manage to stake a big enough claim.

Paul needs to display the correct resolve. He needs to raise confidence in his dependability among the coaching staff and maximize every rep coming his way. Even that might not be enough, but it'll give him a good chance to make the practice squad or potentially get picked up off the waiver wire by another organization looking to enhance its options.

The margins are razor-thin for Paul heading into training camp. We'll find out a lot about the player's inner desire, for good or bad, in the coming weeks before his fate is finally determined.
