It's not every day that fans see ESPN's senior NFL insider, Adam Schefter, go back and forth with another NFL reporter, but that's what happened on Christmas Day.
Schefter initially reported that "former Seahawks Super-Bowl winning HC Pete Carroll has expressed interest in the (Chicago) Bears HC job and would like to return to the sideline next season."
Shortly after, NBC Sports' Mike Florio wrote a story, taking Schefter's report and pushing a narrative "that Carroll’s agent has specifically told this to Schefter in the hopes that Schefter would broadcast it to the world, in the hopes of generating public opinion."
Schefter wasn't having it, replying to Pro Football Talk's (Florio) post on X, which contained Florio's story.
"Everything you say here is 100 percent wrong," Schefter said. "Keep up the guess work and Merry Christmas."
Florio then responded, "Thank God the college basketball team I coach isn't in last place in the Horizon League."
While it seems Carroll is interested in returning to coaching, it’s unclear if his agent had a strategy in place to stir up public opinion.
Carroll has as good a resume as any football coach. For nearly two decades at the college level, he led USC to two national championships.
The 73-year-old holds a 181-131-1 record in the NFL and has coached for six different organizations, most notably leading the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory in 2014.
Carroll was let go by the Seahawks after the 2023 season, having spent 14 seasons there.
