Adam Schefter: Mike McCarthy looking increasingly safe with no word from Jerry Jones
? Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

After yet another early playoff exit, it feels like the Dallas Cowboys are facing more questions than answers this week. Fans wonder what the loss to the Green Bay Packers means for head coach Mike McCarthy and his future with the franchise, although all has been quiet so far this week.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, that could be an indication of what Jerry Jones might be thinking about McCarthy’s future.

Schefter pointed to the silence from the Cowboys as a potential sign that McCarthy could come back for another season despite becoming the first team to ever lose to a No. 7 seed since the playoffs expanded in 2020. Jones hasn’t said anything since admitting he was “floored” after Sunday’s loss to the Packers, and the postseason conversations are ongoing. While things could change, it’s starting to look more like McCarthy is safe.

“A lot of people thought after the Dallas Cowboys’ shocking loss on Sunday that there might be news about Mike McCarthy’s future on Monday. And there wasn’t,” Schefter said on NFL Live. “We thought there might be news on Tuesday, and there wasn’t. We thought there’d be news on Wednesday, and so far, there’s nothing. The longer this goes, I think the more the chances increase that Mike McCarthy might be safe and that Jerry Jones won’t do anything at all at head coach other than leave Mike McCarthy in place.

“Now, there are organizational meetings going on, there are exit interviews with Mike McCarthy and the players. There’s a chance that Mike McCarthy could have a season-ending press conference tomorrow. Now, look, during the course of these conversations at any point in time, Jerry Jones could decide to make a change. But here we are, three days after that collapse against the Packers, and there’s still nothing. And with each hour that passes, you wonder if there will be. No final or official word out of Dallas as to exactly what they’re doing. But let’s take the signs for what they’re worth right now.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter: Decisions from the Cowboys, Eagles feels like a volcano waiting to erupt

Dallas isn’t the only franchise with a potential decision at head coach. The Philadelphia Eagles are also facing questions about Nick Sirianni’s future. They started the season 10-1, but finished with an 11-6 overall record. Then, they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the playoffs.

Those are two big dominoes. If either franchise makes a change, it would have a strong pool of coaches at its disposal. That’s why Schefter likened the situation to a dormant volcano.

If it erupts, it’s going to get really interesting.

“We’re waiting for a decision from Dallas. We’re waiting for a decision from Philadelphia,” Schefter said. “You would’ve thought there would’ve been something from at least one of these places by now. And it almost feels like there’s a volcano [and] we’re waiting to see if and when it’s going to erupt, and it hasn’t. We’re sitting by waiting to see if either team makes a move.

“I don’t think, the best I can tell, that Dallas has done an awful lot of checking in with other coaches who could be available out there. We see Pete Carroll, we see Mike Vrabel, we see Bill Belichick, Jim Harbaugh. I don’t think that’s been going on. We wait for a word from them.”
