Adam Schefter reveals chances Jaxson Dart can land New York Giants starting QB job over Russell Wilson

The New York Giants are looking for stability at the quarterback position after moving on from Daniel Jones by bringing in multiple new quarterbacks. That includes veteran Russell Wilson and first round pick Jaxson Dart.

There is an expectation that Wilson is going to be the starter while Dart prepares to take over in the future. However, as NFL insider Adam Schefter explained on Get Up, there is always a chance that plans change.

“The Giants would like to be as patient as they can with their rooking first round draft pick Jaxson Dart,” Schefter said. “And go with Russell Wilson. But, let’s keep in mind that once before Brian Daboll and the Giants’ general manager Joe Schoen was in Buffalo and the plan there was to be very patient with Josh Allen, and he was called on to start a lot sooner than anybody expected.”

Now 36 years old, Wilson won a Super Bowl and has gone to the Pro Bowl 10 different times. However, since leaving Seattle, he’s struggled to play up to the level he previously did both in Denver and last season with Pittsburgh. He’s coming off a year where he completed 63.7% of passes for 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns to five interceptions.

Dart, meanwhile, comes in as a first round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. A star at Ole Miss, he led one of the most explosive college offenses in the country, but the team would still like to give him time to develop in his transition to the NFL if possible.

“Now, we’re not saying that Jaxson Dart is Josh Allen. We’re just saying that they can have a plan to go with Russell Wilson,” Schefter said. “But plans sometimes change. That will depend on Russell Wilson, how well he plays, how much this team wins, and how patient this whole entire organization can be.”

This isn’t the first time the Giants have attempted to implement a similar plan. When Daniel Jones was first taken in the first round, and before Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen were with the team, New York tried to allow Eli Manning to finish out his career before Jones took over. However, Manning only played in four games of his final season. He was benched in Week 3, only returning to fill-in for an injured Jones.

The Jones era never took off, though, and from 2019 through 2024, the Giants started nine different quarterbacks. Jones never started every game of a season and the team decided to move on from him during the 2024 season. After a brief stint with Minnesota, he’s now in Indianapolis.

The hope is that the transition to Dart goes smoother for New York. To do that, however, he’s going to need to develop while the organization learns lessons from the past.
