George Pickens had the best season of his career in 2025 and the Dallas Cowboys still can't get him through the door.
Pickens finished 2025 with 93 catches, 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns earning his first Pro Bowl selection and cementing himself as one of the better receivers in the NFC. His chemistry with Dak Prescott developed fast and became central to how Dallas moved the ball.
The Cowboys responded by putting the non-exclusive franchise tag on him last month locking in a one-year deal worth $27.3 million. But Pickens has not signed it yet and that detail is what's driving the uncertainty heading into the offseason.
Reports have already surfaced suggesting Pickens could skip training camp entirely if a long-term extension is not worked out. And based on what ESPN's Adam Schefter laid out on NFL Live recently that scenario is looking more likely by the day.
"He is not allowed to report to the Cowboys facility unless he signs his franchise tag and he's not signing his franchise tag anytime soon," Schefter said. "Which means by the transit of property, if he hasn't signed and he can't be there, he's not gonna be there until they have some sort of deal.
So, literally, unless the two sides can make some sort of progress, we're not gonna see George Pickens during the offseason program. The chances are as is the case with many of these situations, they come down to the deadline in mid-July, whether they can get the deal done in time or not."

That is a blunt assessment and it doesn't leave Cowboys fans with much to feel good about right now. Dallas has until mid-July to get a long-term deal across the finish line. If nothing gets done by then Pickens plays out the franchise tag year and the whole conversation starts over in 2027.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed Monday that he's been in contact with Pickens but stopped short of saying whether the receiver would show up for voluntary workouts this spring. He didn't push for any commitment on that front either.
"We have plans for GP to be here for a long time, so we'll let the business side of this thing play out and see where it goes," Schottenheimer said, per Tommy Yarrish, keeping the tone steady despite the stalemate.
COO Stephen Jones echoed that patience publicly acknowledging the team's interest in a long-term deal but declining to say anything further while talks are ongoing.
The franchise tag keeps Pickens in a Cowboys uniform for 2026 on paper. Whether he's actually in the building before training camp is a whole different question and right now nobody in Dallas seems to have a clean answer.
