The Green Bay Packers entered the 2025 campaign with sky-high expectations following a blockbuster acquisition of elite pass rusher Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys right before the season kicked off. Many analysts and fans viewed the move as a game-changer, positioning the team as a serious threat to win the Super Bowl.
Despite the optimism, the regular season turned out to be underwhelming. The Packers stumbled to the finish line, dropping their final four contests and suffering a particularly lackluster defeat against the Minnesota Vikings. That game ended in a low-scoring affair, with Green Bay managing just three points in a 16-3 loss, as they rested key starters.
The team’s overall performance resulted in a 9-7-1 mark, securing their spot in the postseason but as the lowest seed in the NFC bracket. As the No. 7 seed, their playoff journey begins on the road against a familiar division rival, the Chicago Bears, in the wild-card round.
Amid the on-field struggles, questions have emerged about the long-term stability of head coach Matt LaFleur. His current deal expires after the upcoming 2026 season, and no new agreement was reached prior to this year’s campaign.
Speculation has grown about whether the organization might part ways with him given the recent difficulties. However, insights from a prominent NFL reporter suggest that separation is unlikely.
During a segment on “The Pat McAfee Show,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter addressed the situation directly.
“I think the bigger deal here is, can they figure out a contract of fair value to keep him there?” Schefter said. “I think that’s what this is about,” Schefter said. “If they can’t figure out a contract that works for both sides, well then you have to ask yourself, are they willing to let him go into the last year of his deal, which he would be, or what do you do about that?”
Schefter went on to express confidence in the outcome.
“I believe the priority will be to re-sign him to an extension this offseason.”
LaFleur took over the helm in 2019, succeeding Mike McCarthy, who guided the franchise to its most recent Super Bowl victory back in 2010. Under LaFleur, the Packers have compiled an impressive 76-40-1 record in regular-season games, raising eyebrows about any potential consideration of a change.
That said, postseason results have been a point of criticism. LaFleur’s teams hold a 3-5 playoff record, even with talented quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and now Jordan Love leading the offense. Some defeats, including a narrow 13-10 divisional-round setback to the San Francisco 49ers several years ago—highlighted by a critical blocked punt—have drawn particular scrutiny.
The Packers organization stands out for its emphasis on championships as the ultimate measure of success, rather than mere deep playoff runs. Injuries plagued the squad this year, potentially providing context and leniency regarding LaFleur’s performance and future with the team.
As the playoffs loom, the focus remains on the immediate challenge against the Bears, but contract discussions could soon take center stage in the offseason.
