Adonai Mitchell ‘Locked In’ As Jets’ Starting WR

The Jets insisted upon including Adonai Mitchell in the blockbuster Sauce Gardner trade with the Colts last year in the hopes that the 2024 second-round pick would become a key part of their receiving corps. His performance in spring practices has already begun to reward that belief.

After nine catches for 152 yards to open the year in Indianapolis, Mitchell doubled that production across his eight games in New York despite a tumultuous quarterback situation and the absence of other receiving talent elsewhere on the field.

The Jets addressed both of those weaknesses this offseason, finding stability under center by trading for Geno Smith and drafting a pair of first-round pass-catchers in tight end Kenyon Sadiq and wide receiver Omar Cooper. Mitchell has already demonstrated a budding connection with his new quarterback, and Garrett Wilson‘s return from injury alongside Sadiq and Cooper will diversify New York’s passing attack and set Mitchell up for easier matchups.

The 23-year-old wideout has also taken to offensive coordinator Frank Reich‘s new offensive scheme and is now “locked in as a starter” for the first time in his career, per Zack Rosenbaltt of The Athletic.

Merely seeing the field consistently, which was an issue in Indianapolis, will likely go a long way in augmenting Mitchell’s impact. He averaged just 20.3 snaps per game as a Colt, but commanded a 77% snap share and almost 47 snaps per game after arriving in New York. Carving out a solid role despite the Jets’ offseason additions is another positive sign that Mitchell will get a chance to deliver on his considerable physical and athletic potential this year.
