Agent of ex-Bills punter addresses client's second chance at NFL career

The agent of former Buffalo Bills punter Matt Araiza released a statement Wednesday, addressing his client's possible second chance at playing in the NFL. The statement comes one day after the woman who accused Araiza of rape during a party in 2021 dropped her civil suit against the 23-year-old.

The allegations first surfaced in August 2022, and Araiza was cut by the Bills two days later. Buffalo selected the San Diego State University product in the sixth round of last year's draft and signed him to a four-year, $3.8M contract.

Araiza earned a workout with the New York Jets in May after being cleared of any wrongdoing following an investigation conducted by the school. Araiza had an uphill battle to claim a roster spot, however, as the Jets had already signed veteran Pro Bowler Thomas Morstead in April.

Joseph Linta (Araiza's agent) sent approximately 20 NFL teams an audio file in April of a meeting in December 2022 between Araiza’s reported victim and San Diego deputy district attorney Trisha Amador in which she explains why no charges were filed against Araiza.

"Because of what's in the video, I can't prove a forceable sexual assault,” Amador told Araiza’s reported victim in the audio file.

According to a transcript of the file, the district attorney’s office concluded that Araiza wasn't present at the time of the alleged rape based on video evidence from that night, which included nine videos of the woman having sexual encounters with men who were not Araiza. As part of their investigation, San Diego State also concluded that none of the former students named in the lawsuit were the subject of a current investigation, "although it reserved the right to 'reinstate' an investigation if there are new developments."

Araiza filed a defamation suit against her six months ago, but eventually dropped it. According to reports, he maintains his right to sue her attorney, Dan Gilleon.

Araiza didn't pay the reported victim any money and didn't admit any guilt throughout the ordeal.
