Alec Anderson Wins Bills’ LG Battle

Buffalo received strong play at left guard from two different starters over the previous three seasons. Connor McGovern handled the position with aplomb in 2023, but he moved to center to replace the departed Mitch Morse the next year. David Edwards then slid in for McGovern at left guard and established himself as the solution at the position. However, after racking up 32 starts in Buffalo, Edwards left during the offseason to take New Orleans’ four-year, $61MM offer.

McGovern joined Edwards in entering the offseason as an impending free agent, but the Bills kept their center around on a four-year, $52.4MM deal. At that point, they were not in position to dole out significant money to a guard. They wound up re-signing Anderson on a one-year, $2.5MM pact and bringing in Corbett on a one-year, $1.49MM contract.

Anderson, who first signed with the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2022, debuted two years later. The 6-foot-5, 305-pounder from UCLA played all 34 games with the Bills from 2024-25, though he made just six starts in that span. Anderson primarily worked as an extra lineman in jumbo packages in 2024. The Bills used him much less in that capacity last season, but the versatile Anderson did impress in a Week 14 start at right tackle in Pittsburgh and a Week 18 start at left guard against the Jets. With Anderson’s help, the Bills combined for 61 points and an eye-popping 460 rushing yards in those two victories.

A former Brown, Ram and Panther, Corbett started in 78 of 94 games during his first eight years in the league. Corbett’s run with the Panthers from 2022-25 included 37 starts in 39 games divided among the guard spots and center, though injuries were a problem for a large portion of that stretch. He missed 30 games over the past three seasons, including four last year. Corbett is now poised to begin this season as an experienced backup in Buffalo, which gave him $1.26MM in guaranteed money.
