The Detroit Lions are casting a wide net with their local visits ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft.
With the visits not counting against their Top 30, the team has wiggle room to make sure they get a look at as many players as possible even if they don't have actual needs
That includes a player who earned All-Big Ten honors in 2024, but plays a position where the team is already pretty loaded.
According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Penn State safety Jaylen Reed is set to have a visit with the Lions.
Penn State S Jaylen Reed, projected as a Day 2 draft pick by many, posted this pic of the #Giants’ facility during a visit yesterday. That’s considered a local visit for the team. Reed also has visits with the #Lions, #Eagles, #Ravens and #Jets scheduled. pic.twitter.com/fBwcjwB8hA

Reed is coming off of a solid senior season for a Nittany Lions squad that made a run to the national semifinals.
He set career highs with 98 total tackles, seven tackles for a loss, and three interceptions.
Reed also put together some solid performances on the big stage. He had a sack and eight total tackles against Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. Then he followed that up with six tackles, including one for a loss against Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl.
As far as needs go, safety should be just about as low on the list as it gets for the Lions as the team already has two of the best in the league.
Brian Branch earned a spot in the Pro Bowl last season while Kerby Joseph was named to the All-Pro First Team.
Branch just finished his second NFL season while the Lions are expected to be working on a contract extension for Joseph after his third season, so it's unlikely either safety is going anywhere any time soon.
However, depth has been an important focus for the Lions this offseason after they were depleted by injuries during the 2024 season.
That could give the Lions some interest in adding Reed late in the draft as a depth option who had a productive senior season.
