All-Pro WR Justin Jefferson says the Titans have a rising star in the NFL
USA TODAY Sports

Wide receiver Justin Jefferson and the Minnesota Vikings (8-2) handled business in Week 11 against the Tennessee Titans (2-8), leaving Nashville with a 23-13 win. The game, however, was more competitive than the final score indicates.

Afterwards, Jefferson felt compelled to pass on some words of encouragement to Tennessee rookie cornerback Jarvis Brownlee, Jr.

Justin Jefferson calls Jarvis Brownlee a star

"I talked to (Jefferson) in the game, too," Brownlee said on Wednesday. "He just told me: 'Keep going,' and that I'm going to be a star in this league. He just gave me all high praise."

Jefferson is on pace for another first-team All-Pro season in 2024. Against the Titans, the Vikings stud hauled in six catches on eight targets for 81 yards. Jefferson has snagged 59 passes for 912 yards and five touchdowns this year.

Brownlee allowed one catch for 25 yards on a first-and-ten play in the third quarter when matched up with Jefferson in the game.

Tennessee's fifth-round pick this year has been one of the better revelations during a season that feels a little lost. Playing 478 defensive snaps already this season due to injuries sustained by both starting outside corners L'Jarius Sneed and Chidobe Awuzie, Brownlee has held his own. He has proven himself to be quality depth, at minimum.

Jarvis Brownlee being tested

Opposing quarterbacks are coming after the Titans banged-up secondary with varying levels of success.

45 times has Brownlee been targeted this season, allowing 28 catches (62.2%) for 386 yards and one touchdown on the NFL's stingiest passing defense. That reception percentage is tied with Pittsburgh Steelers rookie stud Beanie Bishop and .7% better than Sauce Gardner (62.9%). Penalties have been Brownlee's biggest issue thus far, tied with Carlton Davis of the Detroit Lions for second-most among qualified corners (8).

Brownlee acknowledged he must play a cleaner game this week on the road against the Houston Texans (7-4) while maintaining his physicality.

"I just control what I can control," said Brownlee. "With that being said, I have to work on putting my hands down sometimes. That can cause me to be too aggressive, but nothing's going to change. I feel a certain way when those calls happen. As a DB, you're not going to want to get called for a PI, but you have to know there's a whole lot of football yet to be played. It's about that short-term memory."
