With six quarterbacks taken in the first 12 picks, the board was impressively strong at pick 25, when the Green Bay Packers selected offensive lineman Jordan Morgan. Now, day 2 will be extremely valuable for the Packers for several reasons.
First, the team has four total picks on Friday — an extra second-rounder from the New York Jets and an extra third from the Buffalo Bills. With so many picks, including the 41st overall selection, the Packers can add significant talent to the roster.
Evaluating the board, these are the five top options still available.
DB Cooper DeJean
Most mock drafts recently projected Cooper DeJean to the Packers because of his versatility and athleticism. He would fit a position of need at safety with the potential to move to cornerback eventually. The Packers decided to move in another direction with Morgan, but maybe if DeJean is still there at 41, general manager Brian Gutekunst could pull the trigger.
DT Jer'Zhan Newton
The situation with Kenny Clark is up in the air, and the veteran is entering the final year of his second contract with the Packers. With that in mind, it would make sense to add a high-level productive interior rusher. Newton was projected to be a first-round pick, as the 24th player on the consensus big board, so that option can still work.
WR Adonai Mitchell
The wide receiver market is bonkers. Amon-Ra St. Brown received $30 million per year from the Detroit Lions, and AJ Brown extended his deal right before the draft with the Philadelphia Eagles for $32 million per year. Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs have only two years left on their rookie deals, so the Packers can start adding more options to be comfortable in the long run. Adonai Mitchell doesn't have eye-catching stats, but his film is excellent, and that's a fine combination on day 2.
OL Jackson Powers-Johnson
The Packers drafted an offensive lineman in the first round, but that doesn't mean the situation of the unit is completely solved. Josh Myers is projected to start at center, which isn't an ideal scenario per se, and he also is entering the last year of his deal. Jackson Powers-Johnson could be the answer for both scenarios, short- and long-term.
LB Whoever you prefer
No off-ball linebacker has been drafted in 2024, so the Packers have all the options open to fill a need. The first linebacker on the consensus board is Edgerrin Cooper, who received some late first-round buzz. However, he is a preferred weak-side linebacker, just like Quay Walker, so middle linebackers like Payton Wilson or Junior Colson are better fits for what the team needs right now.
