The former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards used to save a few errant passes from his quarterback back during his playing days. And now, after his retirement, Edwards has made one of the most important saves of his life.
According to a report from Detroit’s local news outlet WDIV, Edwards saved an 80-year-old man from a locker room attack in a YMCA locker room in Farmington Hills, Michigan. According to the report, Edwards was returning to the locker room following a workout, when he noticed a scuffling between two about someone playing music a little too loud.
Despite the scuffle, Edwards claims he decided to mind his business and stayed out of it. However, when things escalated into physical violence, he couldn’t sit behind and let the fight continue.
I heard a thud. That's what got me up. That's what got me to turn around. He grabs the back of the victim's head by the hair and he was about to slam it down on the counter. I grabbed him, subdued him. Bryan Edwards recalled the incident
Initially, Edwards didn’t of his action as something serious and thought the 80-year-old man might’ve suffered a concussion. However, he only realized that he possibly saved the old man’s life after the police told him about the severity of the injury.
At the end of the day, I was just, that's what you do. People go to work out, they have a good time, they live 80 years, and this isn't how they expect for something maybe (to) take their life. ... My mom, my grandmother, my father, in that moment, when you come back home, these are the people you think about. Braylon Edwards said
The names of the 80-year-old victim and the alleged assailant have not been released by the police. The police said the 25-year-old suspect ran away from the YMCA but was later arrested for attacking both the old man and the former Browns pass catcher.
Braylon Edwards played in the NFL for 8 years
The former Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards, who recently became a hero after saving an 80-year-old man, had a solid NFL career that lasted for 8 years. He played for multiple teams, including the Browns and the New York Jets.
Firstly, Edwards had a remarkable college football career with the Michigan Wolverines, where he set the record for most receiving yards by a player in the program’s all-time history. As a result, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns as the No.3 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.
Edwards had a decent few years with the Browns. In his first four years in the league, he registered 1 1000-plus receiving yards season and 1 Pro Bowl season. However, he failed to live up to the hype of a 1st round pick and was traded to the Jets during 5th year.
It all went downhill for Edwards from that point as he bounced around a few teams for the next 3 years before he was out of the league. Edwards last had a practice squad stint with the Jets back in 2013 and hasn’t played in the league since then.
