Former Houston Texans running back Rex Burkhead announced his retirement Monday via social media. Burkhead played for 10 seasons after the Cincinnati Bengals made him a sixth-round pick (No. 190 overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft.

“I've been blessed to be able to play the game of football for 26 years and looking back there are many people I would like to thank.” - Burkhead

After four seasons with the Bengals, Burkhead signed with the New England Patriots in 2017 and played a vital role in helping the franchise win its final championship amid the Bill Belichick and Tom Brady dynasty.

Burkhead joined the Texans in 2021 after playing four seasons in New England. In two seasons, Burkhead rushed for 507 yards on 148 attempts, to go along with three touchdowns.

His best game came during the Texans Week 16 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in December 2021. Burkhead finished the game with 149 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns.

Burkhead‘s contributions also marked the last victory for former head coach David Culley. He became the lead back for a position group that featured David Johnson and Phillip Lindsay.

His role with the Texans took a decline in his final season in 2022 following to the emergence of Dameon Pierce. Burkhead ends his 10-year career with 1,908 yards on 488 attempts and 17 touchdowns.

The 2021 season marked a career year for Burkhead. He finished the season as the Texans' top rusher, recording 427 yards and three touchdowns.
