Insider details Giants' faith in Daniel Jones

It sounds like Daniel Jones will receive a legitimate opportunity later this year to prove he can be the long-term franchise quarterback of the New York Giants.

"The Giants are not ready to shut the door on him," NFL insider Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report revealed about Jones, as shared by Patricia Traina of Fan Nation's Giants Country. "There’s a lot still to be played out in terms of the Daniel Jones-Giants situation. What I’ve been told is that not only does the staff and (head coach) Brian Daboll believe in Daniel Jones, but (offensive coordinator/assistant head coach Mike Kafka) and the players do as well."

Schultz offered his update after it was reported that the Giants are "more likely to add a veteran free agent" to their quarterback room this offseason than use a high draft pick on a signal-caller.

Big Blue currently holds the rights to overall draft selection No. 6 and probably won't trade multiple assets to move up for any one player since the club has a plethora of roster holes to fill by September.

"When you combine both of those things together . . . there’s a really good shot that Daniel Jones next season is the starting quarterback and that he does return to the type of success he had in 2022," Schultz continued.

The Giants signed Jones to a four-year contract reportedly worth up to $160M last March after he guided the club to a road playoff victory. He then tossed two touchdown passes and six interceptions across fewer than six full games this season before he suffered a torn ACL in early November.

While it's hoped he'll recover from that setback by Week 1 in September, he's also missed a total of nine contests since 2021 due to neck issues.

Schultz noted that the Giants trading Jones anytime soon can be "ruled out" because of the 26-year-old's contract combined with his injury history. The Giants can escape Jones' deal after the 2024 campaign.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen reportedly is willing to let star running back Saquon Barkley reach free agency in March at a time when questions about Daboll's future beyond 2024 hover over the organization.

With Kafka staying put for at least one more season, Schoen and Daboll have little choice but to build around Jones unless a top-three quarterback prospect unexpectedly falls into their laps at draft choice No. 6.
