Jets officially eliminated from AFC East title contention

The New York Jets were on the verge of winning their first football game in 2020 but gave up 13 points to the Patriots and ended up losing 30-27. The loss guaranteed the 0-9 Jets will have a losing record this season but it also officially knocked them out of contention in the AFC East.

To be clear, the Jets' chances of winning their division all but disappeared Week 1 but this game made it so they have been mathematically eliminated from being the AFC East champion. The Buffalo Bills currently lead the division with a 7-2 record and while the Jets could technically win all of their remaining games and tie the Bills, who would then need to lose all of their remaining, they have already lost two games to Buffalo.

But the Jets aren't technically out of the playoff picture yet, though they are very, very close. There are currently four AFC teams with a 5-3 record (Raiders, Browns, Colts, Dolphins) who are all fighting for the final two wild-card spots in the AFC. Basically, if the Jets lose any more games this season, they are all but eliminated and if they lose two games, it's officially over.

While the Jets have virtually no shot at making the postseason for the first time in a decade, they are officially on the 0-16 watch, as they have made it through more than half their season without a win. There have only been five winless teams in NFL history, with the 2017 Cleveland Browns being the most recent team to achieve this infamous record.
